Lower Prices, Higher Cotton Costs Weigh on Gildan in Q1
The net loss was $46.1 million against a profit of $35.9 million in the first quarter ended Jan. 1, in line with the Montreal company’s revised estimates outlined in December. Revenues fell 8% to $303.8 million from $331.2 million and gross margin slid to 2.1% from 24.6% in the year-ago period. For the first time, GIL broke down its quarterly results by segment. Printwear suffered a $30.8 million operating loss as division sales slid 41% to $147.2 million, although international sales grew 30%; Branded Apparel turned a $2.4 million operating profit as unit revenues expanded 93% to $156.6 million.
