The nomination of Robert Lighthizer to be the chief trade negotiator for the U.S. signals a much more confrontational approach to dealing with China and Mexico, just as President-elect Donald Trump promised during the campaign. Lighthizer, a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, has frequently represented the U.S. steel industry in its disputes with China over its trade practices, where he has handled anti-dumping and countervailing duties. He also has government experience as the deputy USTR with the rank of ambassador during the Reagan Administration and as chief of staff for the Senate Finance Committee.
