Pandemic Hurt Team Sports Participation, SFIA Finds


The pandemic dropped play occasions by 500 million across the U.S. in 2020, according to the latest U.S. Trends in Team Sports report from SFIA, with 11 of the 23 tracked team sports falling by more than 20%. Total participation, meanwhile, dropped by 3.8 million players during the year. A rise in casual play for many sports points to the falloff coming purely from pandemic impacts and not a structural change in team sports interest, with SFIA expecting future numbers to reflect pent-up demand for organized play.
