Over the past 11 years, outdoor participation has ranged from a high of 50.0% of the population in 2007 to a low of 48.4% in 2014 and 2015 and ticked up slightly to 48.4% in 2016, according to the Outdoor Foundation’s report. Because of population growth, this translated to a net increase of 2 million outdoor participants; however, the number of outdoor outings declined an indicated 6% to 11.0 billion in 2016 from 11.7 billion the year before.
