Caleres’ bottom line increased 16% to $17,212,000 from $14,902,000 on slightly higher sales of $632,142,000 against $631,509,000 in a first quarter that started slow but improved once warmer Spring weather arrived. Famous Footwear revenues slipped 1% to $363,411,000 from $366,494,000, reflecting 39 fewer doors and a -0.8% comp, but operating earnings increased 8% to $21,857,000 from $20,279,000. Comps improved sequentially from down 4.0% in Feb., to flat in Mar., then up 1.1% in Apr. with the last two weeks up more than 13%. Comps are up 1% year-to-date. E-commerce accounted for 10% of sales in the quarter.
