Administration Approach to NAFTA Renegotiation is Delicate


The objectives unveiled by the U.S Trade Representative for updating NAFTA were light on inflammatory rhetoric and heavy on ensuring that the process goes smoothly, much to the relief of many importers like the AAMA and the NRF. While sporting goods has relatively little exposure to NAFTA on sourcing, there is considerable interest in duty free access for trade, and the NAFTA objectives provide a good bellwether for how the Administration will approach trade policy with other countries where there is heavier sourcing exposure.
