PENTLAND SOFTGOODS OPERATIONS IMPROVE IN 1996.


Although it reported a net loss of £19.0 million($29.64 mm) following the disposition of several operations, Pentland'sfootwear, clothing and sports operations had an operating incomeimprovement of 18 per cent to £21.3 million ($32.76 mm) from£18.1 million for the FY ended Dec. 31. Turnover improved34 per cent to £485.6 million ($757.54 mm).

Also included in the 1996 results were a writedownof £8.1 million ($12.64 mm) related to the writedown to marketvalue of the investment in L.A. Gear.
